Parking sign arrows: which side of the pole does the rule cover?
Short answer
Stand on the sidewalk facing the sign. A left arrow means the rule covers the curb to the left of the pole, up to the next sign. A right arrow covers the right. A double arrow covers both sides. On a stack, each sign’s arrow only applies to that sign.
How to read arrows
- One arrow: the rule covers the curb in that direction, until the next sign.
- Two arrows (↔): the rule covers both sides of the pole.
- No arrow: in many cities this means the rule covers the spot near the sign or the whole block face. Check the next pole along to be sure.
Why stacks get confusing
A pole can hold a red “No standing ←” sign above a green “2 hour parking” sign with no arrow. On the left side, the red rule wins during its hours. On the right side, only the 2 hour rule applies. Same pole, two different answers.
When the answer depends on the side, ParkPeek shows “DEPENDS” and asks you to tap Left or Right, then gives you the answer for your spot.
